MateoBot

AI went from writing weird poems to drafting professional emails, and companies are starting to let it reply to real customers.

The idea

Give a model the right domain information and train it on your style and tone, and it can draft customer emails well enough to save real time. The question isn’t whether an LLM can do this. It can. The question is whether a human approves before sending.

So I built MateoBot, a sort of digital twin. It reads my incoming email and drafts replies in my style, with access to my calendar for availability. Drafts land in my folder, I review, sometimes tweak, sometimes just hit send, and everything is logged.

Why it matters

  • Most companies still keep a human in the loop. But that’s changing fast.
  • Logging builds trust. Seeing exactly what the bot did makes it easier to hand over more.
  • Autonomy can be earned. If the experiment keeps going well, I may let it send some emails on its own.

Earning autonomy

Starting with drafts and human review, then removing review only where the bot has proven itself, is a pattern that works well beyond email.

Would you want something like MateoBot for your inbox or your company’s?

hey I’m Matt

you ever notice how AI went from writing weird poems to helping you write professionally?

and now AI is pretty good at writing emails

so good that companies are starting to let AI draft real emails and replies to emails to their customers

If you augment a model with the right domain information and train it on style and tone, you can have AI draft customer emails and responses and achieve a pretty substantial efficient savings.

The question isn’t whether or not a large language model can do this task well, because they do …so you don’t need to ask that question.

However, the remaining question is…

do you leave a human in the loop to approve the emails or just let the bot fly solo

From folks I’ve been talking to, most companies still want a human to approve the email before it is sent

but that’s changing fast

and this week I’ve been running my own little experiment <SMILE>

I’ve built a sortof digital twin called Mateo bot

Mateo bot reads my incoming emails and writes draft replies all by itself

every time an email hits my inbox, Mateo bot automatically jumps in and crafts a thoughtful and appropriate response that embodies my writing style and has access to lots of information, including my calendar for checking for availability.

but the drafts don’t send automatically

they land in my draft folder…and I review them first

sometimes I tweak the words, sometimes I just hit send

Mateo bot logs everything it does, so I can easily see what it has been up to in my absence.

In the next week or two, if my experiment continues to progress well, I may take myself out if the review process for SOME emails, and just let Mateo bot write and send them without my input or approval.

What do you think about my experiment with Mateo bot…is this something you’d like to implement for your inbox or another inbox at your company.

I’d love to hear what you think! Please drop your thoughts in the comments below. And thanks for watching.
